  3. 3
  4. 4
  5. 5

Session 1 · AUTHOR: Understand

Close reading: Tuwhare and Glover

  1. 10 minListen to Hone Tuwhare's 'Rain' read aloud twice with eyes closed. Draw what you see.
  2. 15 minSecond poem: Denis Glover's 'The Magpies'. What story does it tell? What changes for Tom and Elizabeth? What do the magpies keep doing?
  3. 15 minAnnotate one poem in groups: circle images, underline sounds, star the line that carries the biggest feeling. Share with another group.
  4. 10 minTheme talk: what is each poem really about underneath? Use evidence from the words.

Session 2 · AUTHOR: Techniques

The poet's toolkit

  1. 10 minRead 'The poet's toolkit'. Sort example lines into simile, metaphor, personification, alliteration, onomatopoeia, repetition, hyperbole.
  2. 20 minMetaphor machine: draw an object card and a feeling card and turn them into a metaphor ('Worry is a wet sock').
  3. 15 minTool hunt: find three devices in the week's poems and write what effect each one has on a reader.
  4. 5 minChoose one device you want to try this week and write it at the top of your notebook page.

Getting started

Use a colour key: green for images, blue for sounds, red for feelings.

Stretch

Compare the endings of the two poems. Which ending is more hopeful, and which words make you think so?

Checkpoint

Each student can name a device, find it in a poem and explain its effect in one sentence.

Activities for this week

  • Blackout poem: Can you find a poem hiding inside someone else's words?
  • Metaphor machine: How can comparing two unlike things make a feeling easier to see?
