Session 1 · SOLVE: Verify
Measure again and improve
- 10 minGo back to each failed checkpoint and re-measure the distance and direction.
- 20 minFix the map and the clues. Check one scaled distance on the map against a tape measure to prove the scale is right.
- 15 minSecond test with a new group of testers. Compare the results with week 4: did the changes work?
- 5 minRecord your evidence: before and after results for each checkpoint.
Session 2 · SOLVE: Explain
Map launch
- 10 minPrepare a short guide: how to read the grid, the compass rose and the scale bar.
- 25 minLaunch: teach a junior class or visiting whānau to use the map, then run the course with them.
- 10 minExplain your maths: each group explains one decision (scale, grid origin, a tricky bearing) and the evidence that it works.
- 5 minReflect: where else would you use grids, angles and scales?
Getting started
Use a checklist for the map: title, grid, compass rose, scale bar, key, north arrow.
Stretch
Write a version of the course for the local park using a Topo50 grid reference for the start point.
Checkpoint
The final map and course have passed a second test and the class can explain how the maths makes them accurate.
