Session 1 · CREATE: Experiment
Two ways, one idea
- 10 minMini-lesson: the elements (line, shape, colour, texture, space, form) and three principles (emphasis, contrast, balance). Show one artwork for each.
- 30 minMake two fast trials of the same idea in different media, e.g. charcoal drawing vs torn-paper collage, or a cool-colour version vs a warm-colour version. Ten to fifteen minutes each. No rubbers.
- 10 minPhotograph both. Under each, write one thing that works and one thing that doesn't.
Session 2 · CREATE: Experiment
Symbols and colour moods
- 10 minWhat is a symbol? A broken chain for freedom, a kete for knowledge, an empty chair for someone missing. Brainstorm symbols for your idea that are yours to use.
- 15 minColour mood swatches: paint or colour six swatches and label the feeling each gives you. Choose a palette of three.
- 15 minDesign your own symbol: simplify an object from your stimulus into a strong shape you could draw from memory.
- 10 minPīwakawaka asks one question about a choice you made. Write your answer under your trials.
Getting started
Trial one medium using the template composition (one big shape, one small shape, one texture).
Stretch
Take a risk: try a material or technique you have never used, such as ink and a stick, or collage on corrugated card.
Checkpoint
Two documented trials, a three-colour palette, one original symbol and a reason for choosing your direction.
