Session 1 · CREATE: Experiment
Question-led trials
- 10 minSet one question for each trial, e.g. 'Does a dark ground make the symbol stronger?' or 'Does wire or card make the form feel lighter?'
- 35 minRun three technique trials, 10 minutes each. Label every trial: question, what you did, what happened, what next.
- 5 minStar the trial that best answers your success criteria.
Session 2 · CREATE: Experiment
Motifs and maquettes
- 10 minMotifs: how one repeated shape can carry meaning across a whole work. Look at how Pacific and Māori artists use repetition, then design your own.
- 20 minDevelop your own motif from something in your idea: draw it five times, simpler each time.
- 15 minBuild a maquette (small model) or a digital mock-up of the whole work, showing scale in the real space.
- 5 minPīwakawaka asks one question about your motif. Answer it in your diary.
Getting started
Run two trials with the same materials, changing just one thing.
Stretch
Combine two techniques in one trial, e.g. print over paint, or light behind cut paper.
Checkpoint
Three labelled trials, an original motif and a maquette or mock-up, each with a decision and a reason.
Activities for this week
- Visual diary habit: How do artists grow an idea over time?
- Motif to pattern: How can one small shape become a whole design?
- Maquette in the real space: Will it work at full size, in that place?
