Session 1 · THRIVE: Tune In

Risks that change

  1. 8 minHook: show a photo of a sunny track, then describe the same place three hours later in rain and wind. What changed? What stayed the same?
  2. 20 minRisk ladder (Activity: 'Risk ladder'): sort risk cards for one context, then change one thing (weather, time of day, a tired group member) and re-sort. Risks move.
  3. 12 minRead the NZ Land Safety Code's five points together. Match each point to one risk card it would help with.
  4. 10 minRead the scenario. Choose your class context. Private note: one thing you love about being outdoors and one thing that worries you.

Session 2 · THRIVE: Tune In

Weather watchers

  1. 10 minWhy New Zealand weather changes fast: islands in a big ocean, mountains that force air up, westerly winds. Look at today's forecast and a mountain forecast for the same day.
  2. 20 minWeather watch (Activity: 'Weather watch'): go outside, record cloud type, wind (Beaufort clues), temperature and how it feels. Start a two-week class weather diary.
  3. 12 minWind chill: the same 10°C feels much colder with wind and rain. Find the forecast wind for your trip area and predict how it would feel.
  4. 8 minSet up a weather-watcher roster so a pair checks the forecast every day until the trip.

Getting started

Use picture risk cards and a three-step ladder: low, medium, high.

Stretch

Compare the forecast for your town with the forecast for a nearby mountain or coast. Why are they different?

Checkpoint

You can explain how the same place can become riskier, and name the five points of the Land Safety Code.

Activities for this week

  • Risk ladder: How do risks outdoors change, and who do they affect most?
  • Weather watch: What can the sky and a forecast tell you about the next few hours?
