Session 1 · VOICE: Investigate
Control what you can
- 15 minWhich variables did you control, and which couldn't you? List them honestly.
- 25 minRun the comparison survey (trapped vs untrapped, weedy vs cleared, near vs far from a path or edge).
- 10 minIs the sample big enough? Decide whether to add repeats or more sites.
Session 2 · VOICE: Investigate
Wasp data detectives
- 15 minRead the Bushy Park wasp story. What do wasps eat, and who else needs that food?
- 20 minGraph the published results: how much did protein baiting reduce wasp activity, and what did lure traps do? What were the bait stations designed to keep out?
- 15 minKōkako asks one question about a claim. Decide: supported, not supported, or not enough evidence?
Getting started
Use a spreadsheet template with the graph already set up.
Stretch
Compare your own pattern with a published NZ study or DOC monitoring data.
Checkpoint
Each group has a comparison graph and has judged at least one real-world claim against evidence.
Activities for this week
- Wasp data detectives: Which ways of controlling wasps protect a forest, and how do we know?
- Design a safer bait-station door: Can a bait-station entrance let wasps in but keep out native animals?
Useful this week
- Schools toolkit ↗ How schools monitor and control predators safely, with tracking tunnels.
- Weedbusters ↗ Identify weeds and learn how each one spreads and is controlled.
