Session 1 · TRACE: Evaluate

Living with the river

  1. 10 minOptions card sort: higher stopbanks, better warnings, planting the hills, rain gardens and wetlands, raising houses, moving away from the riskiest land, leaving room for the river.
  2. 20 minWeigh each option: cost, who benefits, who pays, how long it takes, what it means for the river's mauri. Rank your top three and justify them.
  3. 15 minSpeak for the river: write one recommendation from the river's point of view, the way Te Pou Tupua might.
  4. 5 minPeer check: is every recommendation backed by evidence from your tests, maps or sources?

Session 2 · TRACE: Evaluate

River expo

  1. 10 minSet up: river profile, flood-risk map, test results and recommendations.
  2. 30 minPresent to your audience: council river staff, a catchment group, civil defence or whānau. Take questions.
  3. 10 minReflect: what did the audience notice that you missed? What will you look for next time it rains?

Getting started

Stretch

Write a short submission to your regional council's long-term plan or flood-protection consultation.

Checkpoint

The report includes a map with grid references, test results, and three recommendations each backed by evidence.
