Our place on the map

  1. 10 minHook: an old photo or map of the rohe next to a recent aerial photo. What has changed?
  2. 20 minMap the place: rivers, hills, coast, marae, early settlements, roads. Mark features that shaped where people lived.
  3. 15 minBuild a class timeline from before 1840 to today.
  4. 5 minChoose the story or place each group will investigate.

Session 2 · TRACE: Relationships

Who was here, and who came?

  1. 15 minMana whenua: which iwi and hapū hold mana in this rohe? (Use the school's local iwi resources.)
  2. 20 minWho arrived, when, and why? Add them to the timeline.
  3. 15 minSources lesson: people, documents, objects, places. What might each one leave out?

Getting started

Work from the class map and add three labelled features.

Stretch

Explain how one landform (a river, a harbour, a pass) shaped a decision people made.
