Session 1 · DESIGN: Improve
Troubleshooting with evidence
- 15 minGraph a week of readings. Which lines are going up or down?
- 15 minScenario cards: overfeeding, pump failure, cold snap, pH dropping. Predict what each does to the graphs.
- 15 minMake one evidence-based change (less feed, more plants, shade, aeration) and record why. Pūkeko asks one question about your data.
- 5 minUpdate the log.
Session 2 · DESIGN: Give Value
Is it worth it?
- 15 minCompare water used by your system with the control pot or an ordinary garden bed.
- 15 minHarvest or measure growth. What did the system produce, and what did it cost in feed, power and time?
- 20 minKaitiakitanga kōrero: how does the system show living things connected? Who benefits from what it grows and teaches?
Getting started
Look at one line on the graph: water temperature. What changed it?
Stretch
Graph ammonia and nitrate on the same chart. Can you see the bacteria at work?
Checkpoint
One change you made because of the data, and a comparison of water use or growth.
Activities for this week
- The system log: What does a week of data tell us about the balance of our system?
- Water use face-off: Does our system really use less water than a normal garden?
Useful this week
- Microsoft MakeCode for micro:bit ↗ Program a micro:bit to log water temperature.
- Enviroschools ↗ How NZ schools run sustainability projects that last.
