Session 1 · AUTHOR: Audience
Who is this for?
- 10 minHook: show the flooded-road shark photo next to a real flood photo. Which is real? How sure are you, and how could you check?
- 15 minSort ten media texts (a cereal box, a bus-stop poster, a news clip, a game ad, a radio jingle) by target audience. What clues gave the audience away?
- 15 minMeet the brief: the junior class wants to know how to tell what's real online. What do six-year-olds already know? What might confuse them?
- 10 minStart the two-day media diary: what, where, who made it, why.
Session 2 · AUTHOR: Understand
What is a media text?
- 10 minRead 'How media texts work'. Define media text, purpose, audience and platform.
- 20 minPurpose triangle: place each diary item in inform, entertain or persuade. Many sit between two corners. Why?
- 15 minSame message, different platforms: how would a school fair be advertised on radio, a poster and a short video?
- 5 minExit card: one media text you saw today and the person or company that made it.
Getting started
Start the diary with just five items and use the diary frame.
Stretch
Work out which items in your diary were chosen for you by a feed and which you went looking for.
Checkpoint
Everyone can name the purpose, audience and platform of three media texts.
