Session 1 · THRIVE: Tune In

Chaos ball

  1. 5 minHook: 'Chaos ball'. Three minutes of ball tag with no rules, no boundaries, no teams.
  2. 10 minStop and talk: what went wrong? Who touched the ball? Who stopped trying? List every problem.
  3. 15 minAdd rules one at a time (boundaries, teams, no contact, how to score) and replay after each. Notice how each rule changes the game.
  4. 10 minSort the rules you made: which keep people safe? Which make it fair? Which make it fun?
  5. 5 minClass survey (anonymous): which lunchtime games do you play, and what stops you joining in?

Session 2 · THRIVE: Tune In

Four families of games

  1. 5 minWarm up with a game of rob the nest.
  2. 15 minGame sort (Activity: 'Four families'): sort sports and games into invasion, net and wall, striking and fielding, and target games.
  3. 20 minPlay a quick taster from three families: keep-ball (invasion), newcomb over a rope (net), and continuous cricket (striking and fielding).
  4. 10 minDiscuss: in each game, how do you score, and what does the other team try to stop? Read the scenario and list what you want to find out.

Getting started

Start the sort with sports everyone knows: netball, rugby, tennis, cricket, then add less familiar ones.

Stretch

Find a game from another country that doesn't fit neatly into one family. Where would you put it and why?

Checkpoint

You can name the four game families, give an example of each, and explain what a rule is for (safety, fairness or fun).
