Week 1 of 4

Notice, wonder and ask a question you can test

  1. 1
  2. 2
  3. 3
  4. 4

Session 1 · VOICE: Validate the Problem

Place walk

  1. 10 minHook: photos of two local places. Which looks healthier, and how could we know?
  2. 20 minWalk your chosen place. Record three things you notice, one you wonder, and what you could measure.
  3. 15 minShare wonders. Sort them: can we test it, measure it, or only look it up?
  4. 5 minChoose a class focus question and write it on the question board.

Session 2 · VOICE: Observe

How scientists record

  1. 10 minObservation vs inference: 'the water is brown' vs 'the water is polluted'.
  2. 20 minPractise with a jar of stream or tap water: colour, clarity, smell, temperature, pH.
  3. 15 minDesign the class recording sheet: what, where, when, units, notes.
  4. 5 minExit card: one observation and one inference from today.

Getting started

Use a sentence starter: 'I notice… I wonder… I could measure…'.

Stretch

Write two different questions about the same place and explain which is easier to test fairly.

Checkpoint

Each student has a testable question and knows what they will measure.
