Session 1 · DESIGN: Give Value
Does it meet the need?
- 20 minFinal test with your user. Ask them to rate how well it meets each 'needs to…' statement in their own words.
- 30 minBuild your design story: the real problem, ideas, choice, test, change, result. Use photos of hands and prototypes, not faces.
Session 2 · DESIGN: Navigate Constraints
Trade-offs and hand-over
- 15 minList what you traded off (stronger but heavier, cheaper but less durable) and which constraints shaped your final design.
- 10 minPlan the life of your design: how to care for it, fix it and what happens to it at the end.
- 25 minPresent the prototype and story to your user and a small audience, and hand it over.
Getting started
Present with one photo from each stage and one quote from your user.
Stretch
Suggest how the design could be made from more sustainable or longer-lasting materials if it went into production.
Checkpoint
Your user says whether it meets their need, and you can explain each trade-off you made.
Activities for this week
- Trade-off table: What did our design give up, and was it worth it?
Useful this week
- The 'no. 8 wire' tradition ↗ Kiwi inventors who fixed everyday problems with what they had.
- Rethinking plastics ↗ Think about the whole life of the materials you choose.
