Session 1 · CREATE: Transform
Smooth transitions and honest feedback
- 7 minWarm-up led by a student from each group.
- 10 minWatch last week's film. Where are the 'dead' moments where dancers stop, look around or walk to their spot? Those are transitions to fix.
- 15 minTransitions workshop (see activities): design a linking movement for each gap. Try a roll, a turn, a travelling step or a slow walk that is part of the dance.
- 15 minCritique circle: pair up with another group. Watch each other's dance and give feedback with 'I notice… I wonder… What if…'. The choreographers listen first, then choose one change.
- 3 minWrite the change you will make in your score.
Session 2 · CREATE: Transform
Costume, prop, light and sound
- 7 minWarm-up.
- 10 minMini-lesson: performance technologies are used with intent. A single colour of clothing, a length of fabric, a torch, a change from full light to a single lamp, or a silence in the music can all add meaning.
- 20 minChoose one technology and test it (see activity 'A prop that changes meaning'). Does it support the idea or distract from it?
- 13 minRehearse the full piece twice with the new choice and the improved transitions. Film the second run and compare it with week 3.
Getting started
Fix one transition only, then show it to a partner group.
Stretch
Give the dance a title and write a 50-word programme note that explains the idea without giving everything away.
Checkpoint
Transitions are planned, at least one change is made from feedback, and one performance technology is chosen for a clear reason.
Activities for this week
- Transitions workshop: How do you get from one section to the next without the dance switching off?
- A prop that changes meaning: Can one object, colour or light change what the audience sees?
