Ad detectives
- 10 minRead 'Why the brightest packets are at your eye level'.
- 25 minAnalyse three food ads or packets: who is the target? Which tricks are used (characters, prizes, celebrities, 'natural', fun, popularity, fitness)? Compare the front claim with the back label.
- 15 minDecide: is the ad fair? What does it leave out?

Kai and belonging
- 15 minWhat does manaakitanga look like at a meal? What do the cultures in our class do to welcome guests with food?
- 20 minWhānau kai interview (prepared at home): share one tradition, recipe or rule about food, and what it means.
- 15 minRespect check: how do we respond when someone's food looks or smells different from ours? Practise respectful curiosity.
Getting started
Use the ad-tricks checklist to tick off what you spot.
Stretch
Find a food ad online or on a bus stop near school and explain how its emotional message (fun, belonging, being sporty) works on young people.
Checkpoint
Students can name three advertising techniques and show one gap between a front-of-pack claim and the label.
