Session 1 · THRIVE: Tune In
The toothpaste test
- 8 minHook: squeeze toothpaste onto a plate and try to get it back into the tube. What does this have to do with posting online?
- 12 minSet class agreements: no real names, no real screenshots, it's fine to pass, and where to get help. Make the help card together.
- 15 minHauora check: in pairs, map where online life touches each wall of Te Whare Tapa Whā (body, mind, friends and whānau, spirit). Keep it general, not personal.
- 10 minRead the scenario of the screenshotted joke. List every question you have about what happened.
- 5 minExit card: one thing that makes a friendship feel safe.
Session 2 · THRIVE: Tune In
Footprints that don't wash away
- 10 minFootprint trail: follow one made-up message as it moves from friend to friend to strangers (Activity: 'Where did it go?').
- 15 minLearn four features of online posts: they last (persistence), lots of people can see them (visibility), they are easy to copy (spreadability) and they can be found later (searchability).
- 15 minInvisible audience: write a message for your best friend, then decide who else might end up reading it. Would you still send it?
- 10 minShare: which feature surprised you most?
Getting started
Use the picture version of the four features: a footprint, an eye, a photocopier and a magnifying glass.
Stretch
Look up what Netsafe says about digital footprints and add one new tip to the class list.
Checkpoint
Everyone can explain in their own words why a post is hard to take back.
