Session 1 · THRIVE: Habits
Be the algorithm
- 5 minQuestion: why does your feed show you what it shows you?
- 25 minPlay the feed card game (Activity: 'Be the algorithm'). Track how your feed changes over five rounds.
- 15 minDebrief: what did the 'algorithm' notice? What did you stop seeing? Link to Netsafe's explanation of feeds.
- 5 minName one habit that gives you more control over your feed (following, muting, 'not interested', time limits).
Session 2 · THRIVE: Relationships
Banter or bullying?
- 10 minWhat is banter? Discuss Netsafe's signs that a joke has gone too far: only one person laughing, it shames someone, it targets identity, it keeps happening.
- 25 minSort scenario cards along a line from 'friendly banter' to 'bullying' (Activity: 'The banter line'). Argue about the tricky middle ones.
- 10 minEmpathy switch: retell one card from the point of view of the person on the receiving end.
- 5 minExit card: one clue that a joke has stopped being a joke.
Getting started
Start the banter line with the four easiest cards, one at each end and two in the middle.
Stretch
Design a new 'feed setting' that would help young people see a healthier mix of content.
Checkpoint
You can explain how a feed learns from what you do, and you can give two signs that banter has become bullying.
