Session 1 · SOLVE: See the Pattern
Winning Differences
- 10 minHook: explain the rules of Winning Differences. Everyone votes: fair, better for A, or better for B?
- 20 minPlay 30 rounds in pairs and tally who wins. Pool the class results on the board.
- 15 minDiscuss: did your pair's results match the class? What patterns do you notice in which differences come up most?
- 5 minExit card: what does 'fair' mean for a game?
Session 2 · SOLVE: See the Pattern
The language of chance
- 10 minRead 'Why 30 tries is not enough'. Put chance words on a line from impossible to certain.
- 15 minProbability line: place everyday events on a 0 to 1 line (rain tomorrow, rolling a 7 on one die, the Sun rising).
- 20 minMystery bag: draw a counter, record its colour, put it back. After 20 draws, predict what is in the bag. Open it and check.
- 5 minWrite one prediction you were confident about and one you weren't. Why?
Getting started
Use 'likely', 'unlikely', 'even chance' before moving to numbers between 0 and 1.
Stretch
Change one rule in Winning Differences so that you think it becomes fair. Test it.
Checkpoint
Everyone can place events on a 0–1 probability line and explain what makes a game fair.
